报告内容摘要:

In engineering, we often determine if a system is safe by evaluating its local stability. For example, a bicycle rider can easily maintain balance under normal conditions, proving stability of operation. However, local stability does not guarantee safety against large external perturbations, such as a deep pothole, which can make a biker fall. The ability of a system to withstand such finite perturbations is known as dynamical integrity.

Accurately assessing dynamical integrity is a major challenge for mechanical engineers. Traditional evaluation methods often struggle with computational cost – which increases exponentially with the system dimension – or with limitations of experimental apparatus.

This seminar explores practical engineering scenarios where dynamical integrity must be carefully addressed to prevent catastrophic failures. To tackle these challenges across the full engineering lifecycle – spanning design, testing, and real-time monitoring – I will present a suite of newly developed techniques:

• The DynIn Toolbox: An iterative numerical scheme for rapid robustness estimation in moderate-dimensional systems.

• Spectral Submanifold (SSM) Reduction: A nonlinear model reduction technique to evaluate the dynamical integrity of large-dimensional models.

• Minimal Data-Driven Methods: Techniques that exploit markers of “ghost” dynamics to predict impending instabilities using only single time-series data.

• Scientific Machine Learning: Utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks to identify critical, unsafe scenarios from noisy sensor data in real time.

By moving beyond simple stability analysis, these combined tools offer a comprehensive framework for ensuring the safe and robust operation of complex dynamical systems.

报告人简介:

Giuseppe Habib received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2013 from the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Hungary) as part of a joint collaboration between the two institutions. Following his doctoral studies, he spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Liège (Belgium) before returning to Budapest on a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and head of the Global Dynamics research group, where he has been based since 2016.

His research interests lie in nonlinear dynamics, with a specific focus on global dynamics, dynamical integrity, vibration mitigation, and nonlinear dynamic vibration absorbers.
